Helen and Dan took part in the Leeds 10k to raise awareness of thyroid disease and support research. They said: Our daughter was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and Graves’ disease when she was just nine years old.

So many people do not realise how debilitating it can be. We had many people say ‘Oh, you just take a pill and it's all fine.’ Having an overactive thyroid affected her in so many ways. Maintaining hormone levels can be difficult and needing regular blood tests used to be very distressing for her.

Four years on she is now used to it and takes it in her stride. Taking part in the Leeds 10k was absolutely fantastic, what an exhilarating experience for both of us!
